Barron Gorge Hydro Station damaged and offline after flooding from Cyclone Japser in North Queensland

Barron Gorge, the 66MW Hydro power station near Cairns in North Queensland, has been damaged by flooding caused by heavy rainfall from ex-tropical Cylone Japser. Owner’s CleanCo announced on LinkedIn yesterday that the water intake structure at the Kuranda Weir washed away due to heavy flooding, leaving the station inoperable. The company’s LinkedIn post about the situation states that the station’s two units will remain offline until “an assessment of the damage and repair plan”.

The units have been unavailable for dispatch since Monday (the 18th of December). The latest MTPASA run published by the AEMO shows that the station’s two units are now marked as offline until July 1st 2024.
