Tasmania spikes to the (new, higher) Market Price Cap, at 16:20 on Monday afternoon 13th July 2026

Yesterday (on Monday 13th July 2026) we published the Release Note for ez2view v9.19, alerting clients to the latest in an ongoing series of upgrades

… this one specifically focused on readiness for PEC Stage 2, amongst other things.

Yesterday afternoon at the 16:20 dispatch interval (NEM time), the Tassie price for ENERGY spiked to the new Market Price Cap of $23,200/MWh

1)  Which (some months ago), Dan flagged that ‘Market Price Cap to increase to $23,200/MWh from 1st July 2026’

2)  So that makes this spike the first instance that any region has hit that level of pricing, only 13 days into the financial year.

So I thought I’d take this snapshot from ez2view v9.19 to highlight a couple things:

2026-07-13-at-16-20-ez2view-TAS-spike

Briefly, with respect to the annotations:

1)  We see the spot price for ENERGY up at the Market Price Cap of $23,200/MWh in TAS:

… but well down from there for ENERGY in the mainland, and also for FCAS in TAS

2)  We’ve written before about declining volume bid in green

(a)  have a look at how little volume was offered in green in this dispatch interval!

(b)  only 109MW at Cethana and Fisher in total

(c)  as a result of a large amount of repricing up to the Market Price Cap

3)  We see that Basslink was restricted such that it as unable to import into TAS

(a)   Remember that Linton wrote about ‘Basslink on track to operate as regulated interconnector from 1 July 2026’

(b)  In this case we see two constraint acting in combination to set the Import Limit at 0MW:

i.  The ‘T_BLINK_TV_NGZ’ constraint equation

ii.  And the ‘V::N_NIL_V2’ constraint equation

4)  We’d noted on Monday morning that ‘Tamar Valley CCGT gets a run over the weekend’

… well, we can see that it was also running Monday afternoon.

5)  We can also see some constraint equations bound with Musselroe and Gordon on the Left-Hand Side.
