I alluded to the following comments in Wednesday’s article about the possible early closure of Gladstone Power Station … though we did not have time to note them at the time.
We were not at the ‘Energy Nation 2025’ conference on Wednesday 24th September 2025 in Sydney, organised by News Corporation, but it certainly seemed to create a buzz – including online via the various news articles collated under ‘Special Reports -> Energy Nation’ on the Australian website.
Because the LNP’s replacement for the former Labour Government’s ‘Energy and Jobs Plan’ appears set to be launched next Friday 10th October 2025, I thought it would be worth adding in these belated notes
Coverage in the Australian
Given it was their conference (and given the message is aligned with the editorial position that’s been taken for a long time), it’s no surprise that there was plenty of coverage – including but not limited to:
1) On the morning of the conference, the print edition noted that Premier Crisafulli ‘sticks to guns’ on their plans for coal-fired power. That article noted that this message was delivered at the CEDA ‘State of the State’ address in Brisbane the day prior (i.e Tuesday 23rd September 2025):
2) Then a day later, we saw ‘Rude shock of Albanese’s green dream as state digs in on coal’ at the top of the front page, following the address by Queensland Treasurer (and Energy Minister) David Janetzki at the Energy Nation 2025 forum in Sydney:
That obviously would have caused a stir, given it was only a week earlier that the ‘Australian Government vows to cut its emissions by 62 to 70 per cent by 2035’.
Coverage Elsewhere
These comments also gained mention elsewhere – including, but not limited to:
1) In the AFR:
(a) We saw that Angela Macdonald-Smith wrote ‘Coal power to be around for ‘decades’ in threat to climate goals’ late on Wednesday 24th September 2025, following the Treasurer’s comments.
2) In RenewEconomy:
(a) We saw Giles Parkinson had already written ‘Queensland LNP vows to burn coal “for many decades” as federal Labor wrestles with climate pledge’ on 11th September, in response to earlier comments.
