~72 hours becalmed in South Australia

It’s Tuesday morning 23rd June 2026 and I’ll share with you this NEMwatch* snapshot of the 08:50 dispatch interval (NEM time):

>> * per conversation with a long-standing client yesterday, NEMwatch (our first software product, released as v1 back in 2000)  remains a well-used, entry-level dashboard to the NEM.  Soon to be upgraded for PEC Stage 2.

In this case, I’ve set the look-back to 7 days – so we can clearly see the two shades of the fuel mix in the South Australian region:

1)  It was over 10 years ago that we illustrated ‘Yin and Yang of Wind in the South Australian region of the National Electricity Market’;

2)  The snapshot above is a more contemporaneous illustration:

(a)  We can see that in the days prior to Saturday 20th June 2026, wind was blowing strongly – and, with that, prices were kept low

(b)  During the Saturday period, the yield fell

(c)  So from Sunday 21st June 2026, through Monday 22nd June 2026 and now into Tuesday 23rd June 2026, aggregate wind production has been quite low

…. as a result of which spot prices in SA have been consistently elevated (with the price particularly spiking Sunday evening and Monday morning when ‘another duck’ (reduced export limit from VIC) also lined up.
