Where might a failure of SCADA systems show up in the MMS

Following the market notice about a suspended market in NSW, today, we note

“AEMO has determined that it has been impossible to operate the spot market in accordance with the provisions of the Rules due to failure of SCADA systems.”

Our early instincts draw us towards checking whether unit MW values are impacted.

Initial MW SCADA

As at the time of writing, we find some units absent from the set that usually have initial MW SCADA readings though no clear pattern is apparent.

This list indicates the units that appear to be missing initial MW SCADA readings:

The snapshot ends 12:25. More impacts after 12:25 could have occurred.

Constraint impacts

As initial MW readings will feed into feedback constraints, these may skew the right-hand side values, and/or mislead the left-hand side quantities.

More analysis is needed to unpick these impacts from typical behaviour.

Further, impacts would also be experienced if network SCADA is impacted (e.g. line flows).

Much more to investigate

There could well be more impacts, and many more avenues to check. Let us know your thoughts in the comments?

  1. It appears FPP calculations were impacted as RCR, Usage and FPP settlement volumes were not published from 11:10 to 12:40
