Wholesale Demand Response Capacity in June 2025

A recent jump in registered capacity of Wholesale Demand Response (WDR) in the NEM happened in June 2025.

Our last review of this participant category in 2023 indicated interest in participation had waned. By October 2023 there was 69 MW of capacity NEM-wide. That was +3 MW on the total from the year before.

Now, at the 25th of June 2025, we find NEM-wide capacity at 92 MW. That’s an increase of 23 MW since the last look.

Capacity

Registration data shows the 92 MW as being is made up of 22 dispatchable units aggregating 140 individual loads in their various ways.

The following chart captures the changes over time.

To gain some perspective on how the registered units have been used we’ve charted the NEM aggregate dispatch amount in MW. There is one bar per dispatch interval, for each non-zero interval in the last year to-date.

Dispatch

The labels describe the dispatch interval with the highest dispatch on the day. The most common times coincide with potential for high prices in the evening peak demand period. We’ve uncovered this feature in prior articles.

Those new units in NSW in June (18 MW in total) were added on or after the 13th. The new units wouldn’t have contributed to the eventful days of June the 12th and 11th.
