Back on Thursday 21st August 2025 we published ‘AGL considering State Government request to keep Torrens Island open for two more years’ after seeing some news articles
… this coincided with the release of the 2025 ESOO.
Well, yesterday we had follow-on news, with the Premier of South Australia announcing that ‘Government negotiates energy security agreement’ here:
Visibility in the AEMO data
Here’s a view of the forecast availability from MT PASA DUID Availability data in the ‘Forecast Convergence’ widget from ez2view:
We see the new sliver of the data at the top of the grid being the extension out till end of June 2028.
Remember that:
- Torrens B station originally had 4 x equally sized units, but B1 was mothballed some time ago
- … we can see this in the sliver of dark blue (more capacity) at the bottom of the widget snapshot above.
- Torrens A station also originally had 4 units (smaller than B), but the A station was closed longer ago.
Related news from AEMO
Also yesterday, the AEMO issued the Media Release ‘AEMO publishes electricity reliability update reflecting power station retirement changes’ which references the above (and also the coincident news about Gladstone potential early closure) and says, with reference to Torrens:
‘Today’s NEM ESOO Update shows that the previously forecast reliability gap for South Australia under the ‘Committed and Anticipated Developments’ outlook in 2026-27 is no longer expected.
As a result, AEMO will not request the Australian Energy Regulator to consider imposing an obligation on retailers and liable entities to enter sufficient contracts through the retailer reliability obligation (RRO) for South Australia in 2026-27.’
Coverage elsewhere
I’ve not yet seen it picked up in many other places, other than:
1) By Giles Parkinson in ‘South Australia and AGL reach funding deal on Torrens Island gas extension due to transmission delays’ on RenewEconomy; and
2) By someone in ‘Revealed: SA dodges major power threat, deal that kept the lights on’ on Adelaide Advertiser (but I don’t have access to that one).
