In amongst my unofficial ‘Energy Week’ last week in Melbourne I noticed that both quarterly digests from the AEMO and the AER for 2025 Q1 were released on the same day – Wednesday 7th May 2025.
So here’s a quick and slightly belated record for our readers here…
(A) Accessing these quarterly Reports

In conjunction with the report, the AEMO published the media release ‘Growing renewable capacity in NEM drives fresh records, as coal availability declines’ … which notes: [the QED] ‘… shows ongoing investment in new projects is contributing to steady growth in renewable generation, which, combined with reduced coal availability, has led to further renewable records in the National Electricity Market (NEM).’ … and … ‘More broadly, NEM-wide underlying demand reached 25,162 MW (editor’s note – this is an average for the quarter), which was a new Q1 record. However, operational demand dipped 0.8% as milder weather conditions in New South Wales and Queensland offset demand growth in southern mainland regions, where it was warmer. Although temperatures were generally lower in Queensland, it was the only state to reach a new peak demand record of 11,144 megawatts (MW) on 22 January.’
|
In conjunction with the report, the AER published a News Release ‘Mixed wholesale energy prices over summer reflect changing market’ that includes the following comment: ‘Wholesale prices in the National Electricity Market (NEM) over summer were lower in northern regions and higher in southern regions compared with the previous quarter and same quarter last year,… ‘
… and … ‘High price periods emerged during times of unusually high demand or when operational issues, including planned and unplanned network outages, reduced availability of lower-priced generation. The AER will publish a high price report in May containing detailed analysis of the January to March high price periods.’ … so stay tuned.

(C) On Social Media…
Obviously, Social Media is a rabbit hole … but we were otherwise focused, so don’t have anything particular to note this time.
