This article was drafted yesterday (on Tuesday 18th August 2026) but did not get time to publish. Rather than rework with updated screenshots, publishing now – so keep in mind.

I was in a conversation with a new ez2view client earlier today and I noticed something in a filtered list of constraint sets that I thought might be of interest to our readers.
Using a different form of a Constraint Set filter, that reaches inside the constraint equations within them to look for units starting with ‘KIDS*’ (i.e. representing Kidston Pumped Hydro) I noted one set of 4 x zero output constraint sets with a scheduled invocation only out until 12:00 on Wednesday 2nd September 2026:
Now, the removal of these ‘zero output constraints’:
- would be a precursor to any output from these units
- but does not necessarily mean that the unit would be providing output (or, more likely, pumping uphill to charge the upper pond) at that time.
… but, at least for me, that was an interesting development:
- that I noted on the call.
- and which prompted me to delve further here…
Now, Genex Power was taken private (by J-Power) some time ago, so there is no need for the company to issue ASX status updates and the like … :
- so it was not so much a surprise to see no relevant status update on its ‘Latest News’ page here
- with most recent Kidston-related updates there being:
- On 16th March 2026 with ‘Kidston: a blueprint for legacy sites’; and
- before that was 18th November 2025 with ‘Australia breaks 40-year pumped hydro drought as 2GWh Kidston project enters the NEM’ (i.e. ‘just’ referencing its registration in AEMO systems, hence the appearance of DUIDs)
However, before we get our hopes up … it’s worth a reminder that on 1st May 2026 we noted ‘Delays at Kidston Pumped Hydro (operations not expected till July 2027)?’:
Still slated for 22nd July 2027
Given that this earlier article used the ‘Forecast Convergence’ widget in ez2view to look at the Kidston Pumped Hydro (generation side) units (i.e. *G1 and *G2) we provide an updated view below:
Headline is that it’s still around 22nd July 2027 where the availability of the generation-side units is slated to be non-zero.
Indeed, a reference to the first image above (of the ‘Constraint Sets’ widget) reveals, in the gold colour, another set of ‘zero output’ constraints sets:
- these are the ‘hold point constraints’
- they currently have an indefinite end time, but this will be adjusted (sometime after July 2027, presumably) when the unit is ready to commence commissioning.
So, in summary:
- we’ll still have to wait another ~12 months to see any real action in the market data.
- but the change in those 4 x constraint sets on or around Wednesday 2nd September 2026 is a curiosity.
