* with apologies to Australian Crawl for riffing the line in that song from yesteryear.
I’ve just posted about ‘ENERGY prices spiking on Wednesday evening 8th July 2026’ and, since that time (the snapshot was for 17:15 NEM time) the prices have climbed above $1,000/MWh in VIC and TAS.
Here’s a curiosity for those who’d like to dig further (perhaps tomorrow with ‘next day public’ data?) – via this ez2view ‘Trends Engine’ query, we see that all 6 x units at the Loy Yang A and B stations are remaining down at part-load … despite very healthy prices:
This with a licence to the software can open their own copy of this query here.
Given that it’s all 6 x units together, I wonder about some root cause that’s part of the common infrastructure. The first thing that comes to mind is some issue in the common mine, or with the coal supply….
1) But that’s a guess!
2) Does any reader know more?

With Amber electricity and price spiked huge this evening. Was curious to find out why.
