First glimpses of output at REECE2 unit, following (possible) fire in August 2025

The REECE2 unit has been out of service since what might have been a fire onsite on 5th August 2025.

It’s one of a number of units we’ve been watching via ‘Notification’ widget alerts in ez2view.  This alert triggered this morning for the first time in almost 7 months, with the first glimmers of output – as seen here:

2026-04-01-at-08-31-ez2view-Notification-REECE2

This shows the first burst in SCADA data metered at ~08:30* (NEM time) on Wednesday 1st April 2026.

* for a reminder of dispatch interval timing, see this article from us in March 2025 and then the AEMO Fact Sheet from October 2025.

What’s in the Market Data?

So I thought I would take a quick initial look – firstly via the ‘Bids & Offers’ widget in ez2view at 08:55 (NEM time) on Wednesday 1st April 2026:

2026-04-01-at-08-55-ez2view-BidsOffers-Reece2

It’s implying (or at least I’m inferring) a cautious approach to introducing the unit back into the NEM … so this, combined with the 5 months offline, makes me wonder what was damaged onsite.

I’ve also taken a look via the ‘Forecast Convergence’ widget in ez2view at 09:MM (NEM time) on Wednesday 1st April 2026:

With this widget and image:

1)  Remember it allows one to ‘look up a vertical’ in order to see ‘that other dimension of time’

2)  And that you can click on an image to

3)  In this image we see:

(a)  A few extensions to the unplanned outage duration length; and

(b)  In the MT PASA DUID Availability data set, the expectation that:

i.  Availability would rise to 80MW from next Saturday 11th April 2026; and

ii.  Remain at that (reduced capacity) level for about 2 years – increasing to 119MW only on the 3rd April 2028

Any news from Hydro Tasmania?

I did quickly check the Hydro Tasmania website (including the Media Releases here) but could not see anything relating to Reece station on a quick scan.
