AEMO signals intention to negotiate RERT contracts as evening supply–demand tightens in NSW on Thursday 18th December 2025

This evening is shaping up to be a tight supply–demand period, and we’ve already published several articles providing running commentary on developments as the day has unfolded.

In the last few minutes, at around 4:50pm NEM time, AEMO published the market notice below, signalling its intention to commence negotiations under the Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader (RERT) mechanism. The notice relates to only the NSW region and covers the evening operating window from 4:00pm through to 11:00pm tonight (NEM time).

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE.

Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader (RERT) Intention to negotiate for additional reserve - NSW1 Region- 18/12/2025

Refer to AEMO Electricity Market Notice no. 131774.

AEMO intends to commence negotiations with RERT Panel members for the provision of additional reserve by issuing requests for tender for the following period of time;

16:00 to 23:00 hrs 18/12/2025

If reserve is required, the period of activation or dispatch will be within this period but may not be for the entire period.
AEMO will issue a further advice if reserve is contracted.

The RERT mechanism allows the AEMO to procure and, if necessary, dispatch additional reserves outside the market to maintain system reliability when there is a risk of unserved energy.
