High prices and tight spare supply, as NEM-wide IRPM drops down to 11.48% on Wednesday 11th June 2025

At around 5pm, Paul put up a very short post at what was just the beginning of an evening of elevated prices across all five NEM regions.

In somewhat of a rare sight, those simultaneous high prices have continued over the past two hours, with prices going above $7,000/MWh in all five regions for a brief period.

Cold weather has brought elevated prices to all five NEM regions this evening.

Notably, the Instantaneous Reserve Plant Margin (IRPM) is also tight tonight — with NEM-wide IRPM so far dropping as low as 11.48% (for the 19:15 dispatch interval). The screenshot below shows alerts coming from a copy of ez2view configured to send me text messages when this metric drops below 15%.

NEM-wide IRPM has been below 15% for the past hour and a half.
