Whilst recent interest has been focused on the lengthy partial outage at Waratah BESS, following ‘catastrophic failure’ of one of its transformers onsite, that’s not the only piece of bad news in terms of the energy supply-demand balance.
Readers here will remember that on Tuesday 26th August 2025, Yallourn unit 2 tripped offline – with rebid reasons suggesting ‘LP turbine issues’.
- Back on 24th September (so 7 weeks ago) we noted ‘Unplanned outage at YWPS2 extended – return to service slated for 15th December 2025 (and may well extend further)’
- In this article we’ll note that the unit’s expected return to service data has been pushed back by a further ~6 weeks … with the unit now expected to be offline till Monday 24th January 2026.
We’ll briefly explore here…
What’s in the Market Data?
To see when this change was made in the MT PASA DUID Availability data set, we use the ‘Forecast Convergence’ widget, firstly with a zoomed-out view of the forward 3* years and backwards 3 years:
* as an aside, we’ll be interested to see what the final recommendations are of the Nelson Review panel in their looming Final Report (due in December), and the extent to which they have considered these related suggestions?
Remember
1) that this widget allows one to ‘look up a vertical’ in order to ‘see that other dimension of time’; and
2) to click on the image to open a larger-size image in new tab.
As noted on the image:
1) We can’t really see the 6-week extension of the current outage (would be in the top rows) due to the size of the data set … so we’ll have to zoom in (below)
2) But also note the recently added second outage for April-May 2026, which will presumably be related to a cover lift and LP turbine inspection for the replacement turbine … wherever they managed to source it from.
3) Also note that the slated closure date for the unit (1st July 2028) is now within the 3-year window, so can be seen out to the top-right of the display.
Zooming into the more near-term data, we see the following:
This shows that it was for the the MT PASA DUID Availability data update for 15:00 (NEM time) on Friday 14th November 2025 that the return to service expectation was pushed back, as we can see.
Any (other) updates from EnergyAustralia?
I had a quick look and can’t see any News Update at this point of their website, at this point. Nor did I see anything on LinkedIn here.
If any reader’s seen anything else, please feel free to add a comment below the article.
Any reporting elsewhere?
I’ve done a quick search, and have not seen anything anywhere else related to the above.
