A quick review of AEMO direction for System Strength in NSW back on Thu 28th August 2025

With activity gearing up for possible direction in NSW early tomorrow morning (Thursday 25th September 2025) for System Strength reasons …

1)  it’s worth a short walk down memory lane to what happened on Thursday 28th August 2025:

(a)  because directions for System Strength have not (yet!) happened all that often in NSW

(b)  though that looks to be changing in a rush …

In accordance with section 116 of the National Electricity Law, AEMO is issuing a direction to Snowy Hydro Limited. For the purposes of the National Electricity Rules this is a direction under clause 4.8.9(a1)(1).

Type of resource: generating unit operating as synchronous condenser

Required actions: Synchronise and operate as a synchronous condenser at 1110 hrs 28/08/2025

Circumstances necessitating the Direction additional detail: intervention is required to maintain the power system in a secure operating state

Expected duration: Until further notice.
