Frequency drop with unit trip at Eraring Unit 2 on Sunday 26th July 2026

I can’t recall when we last saw a trip as large as the 620MW trip that occurred just prior to 08:05 on Sunday morning 26th July 2026:

Here’s the frequency trace – showing a pronounced drop (though does not appear to have been outside the NOFB), followed by a recovery over ~10 minutes:

The recovery, in particular, is a reminder that last week we were pleased to be able to host a series of four articles by Dave Scott about the workings of PFR and FPP:

1)  It’s an excellent series, and well worth a read, if you’re operating assets in the NEM

2)  Part 4 was published on Thursday 23rd July as ‘FPP-Reg-FCAS Recovery: to what extent has it succeeded, and could it be improved?’, and that links to the first 3.

It will have been Primary Frequency Response (generally dominated by batteries and coal units) that will have acted in concert to Regulation FCAS to deliver the recovery.
