Release of Report into Broken Hill blackout in October 2024

Readers here will recall how (overnight on Wednesday 16th October 2024 into Thursday morning), severe storms blew over transmission towers (on the ‘X2 line’)  feeding power into western NSW.  This disrupted power supplies to (and local generation in) areas like Broken Hill for a number of weeks.

… there were a number of articles written and collated here about what happened in that period through until 2nd November.

Now adding to that list, we note that (on Thursday 5th June 2025), the Committee on Environment and Planning within the NSW Government released its 158-page report into ‘The electricity outages affecting Far West NSW in October 2024’:

At the point of publishing this report, we’ve noted:

1)  On Friday 6th June, Alex Mitchell wrote ’Broken Hill blackout: Network operator knew its back-up was out of action, but didn’t tell anyone for RenewEconomy; and

… this was the one that alerted us to the report’s publication (thanks for that).

2)  Also on Friday 6th June, Viki Ntafillis and Sam Bradbrook wrote ‘Power companies should pay compensation for blackouts, NSW parliamentary report finds’ for ABC News.

… that article links through to the article ‘NSW inquiry hears from Far West locals on ‘enormous array’ of power outage issues’ by Josh Mercer and Oliver Brown on 21st March for ABC news.
