Review launched, of AEMO Governance

There’s been a few different bits on media, and social media about the review launched into the governance arrangements of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO):

  • I’d missed it at the time, but apparently was agreed by the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council (ECMC) in December 2025.
  • And was announced by Minister Chris Bowen on Thursday 5th February 2026.

I presume further information about the review will be added to this DCCEEW page

We’ve noted discussion about the review in various places, such as:

1)  By Ryan Cropp with ‘Governments consider major overhaul of energy grid operator’ in the AFR on Thursday afternoon 5th February 2026

2)  In various social media posts:

(a)  In particular, this note by Dennis Freedman was of interest to me … particularly his comments at the end:

‘The reality that this review highlights that the energy transition has added governance pressure points to the already difficult technical challenges that AEMO has to manage.
Are we building the most efficient grid for consumers, or just validating the latest government press release?’

  1. Will the role and actions of the Federal Minister be scrutinised at the same time?
