Another quick article for Sunday 17th August 2025 – this one prompted by an SMS alert notifying me that we’d struck a new ‘lowest ever*’ point for ‘Market Demand’ in Queensland:
As noted there;
1) The low point was at 2,962 MW at the 12:35 dispatch interval (NEM time)
Paul was one of the founders of Global-Roam in February 2000. He is currently the CEO of the company and the principal author of WattClarity. Writing for WattClarity has become a natural extension of his work in understanding the electricity market, enabling him to lead the team in developing better software for clients.
Before co-founding the company, Paul worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the Queensland Electricity Commission in the early 1990s. He also gained international experience in Japan, the United States, Canada, the UK, and Argentina as part of his ES Cornwall Memorial Scholarship.
Have not checked thoroughly, but a quick scan suggests that the low point for Victorian Scheduled Demand at 13:05 today was a new record for minimum (daytime) demand. If it is, this would be an uncanny coincidence given …
We earlier noted this ‘Significant (-786MW) drop in NSW demand, on Wednesday 13th November 2024’ … and, in response, a reader (KC) asked a question that inspired this article.

Not unexpected. A very mild day, limited cloud cover with a bit of a warm breeze about.
Meanwhile demand is through the roof tonight as the chill sets in and solar/wind has died off.
