Frequency wandering south, on Sunday afternoon 21st December 2025

Another short article about (what looks to be) another period of VRE-induced frequency weakness, this one on Sunday afternoon 21st December 2025:

2025-12-21-GridFrequency-4Hours-ver02

Briefly:

1)  Collated here on the WattClarity site are a growing number of cases where we see this

… in this case not outside of the NOFB, but it is happening increasingly.

2)  What can (or should) be done about it?

(a)  We’ve raised questions before about whether the Semi-Scheduled category is sustainable, or scalable;

(b)  AEMO is recognising that this is a growing challenge:

i.  In the article ‘‘Sometimes diversity does not help’ … such as on Friday 31st October 2025’ published last week, we share slides from the AEMO, in which they note the question about whether they will need to procure more Regulation FCAS moving forwards.

ii.  Will this be enough?

(c)  Also last week was the release of the Final Report of the Nelson Review.

… I’ve not yet had time to open that up, to understand the extent to which the panel members considered these concerns we raised on their Draft Report.

  1. That would annoyingly trigger fault recorders for those who have to monitor GPS compliance.
