It’s not the first time that it’s happened in the history of the NEM (e.g. one reader pointed me to another case recently, which was one of the stories in mind when writing ‘A few stories in (coal) generator outages (at Wednesday 9th April 2025)’) but it has been quite rare historically … but interesting to note that, as we hit ‘publish’ here:
- We’re (temporarily) down to only 1 Bayswater unit online in NSW on Tuesday 15th April 2025; and also
- We’re down to only 7 coal units online in NSW … given that it’s ‘outage season’ and that both Mt Piper units are offline on planned outages.
This has arisen because of some plant issue at Bayswater unit 4 that has arisen recently, with the unit coming offline on a forced outage – as captured in this ‘Notifications’ widget alert in ez2view at 10:06 (… based on the InitialMW for the 10:10 dispatch interval NEM time) on Tuesday 15th April 2025
Here’s an updated view of the ‘Generator Outages’ widget in ez2view at the 10:30 dispatch interval (NEM time) on Tuesday 15th April 2025:
We see the expectation (in the current MT PASA DUID Availability data*) that the unit will be off until Wednesday 23rd April 2025.
* thanks to the ERM Rule Change … albeit that AEMC in their wisdom did not extend the extend the transparency to Semi-Scheduled assets.
