Just after midday today (Wednesday 21st April) South Australia and Victoria experienced some high spot prices. Here’s a quick post to highlight what happened.
The table below (taken from NEM-Watch) shows the dispatch price in each region around the time of the spikes, in reverse chronological order.
As can be seen in the market history table, VIC prices almost hit the Market Price Cap (MPC) in the 12:30 and 12:35 dispatch intervals, and again at 13:30 and 13:35.
The SA price peaked at $8999.77/MWh shortly after during the 13:45 and 13:50 dispatch intervals.
Watch the events unfold in this fast-forward video of the state of the NEM between 11:30 and 14:20, (taken from NEM-Watch using the playback function):
Hi Kim,
You’ve given us the numbers but do you know the story behind the numbers? It was a mild day with little indication that such spikes would eventuate so I would be really interested in the factors contributing to this seemingly inexplicable outcome.
Cheers
