WattClarity Deeper Insights

Since 2007, WattClarity has published independent analysis and commentary on Australia’s National Electricity Market, with the vast majority of our insights made freely available to the public.

From time to time, the questions we encounter warrant a level of depth and supporting analysis that we choose to develop as standalone reports. In these cases, the work is published under the WattClarity Deeper Insights banner as more substantial, self-contained publications. These reports combine detailed analysis, curated datasets, and written interpretation to examine complex topics in a rigorous and enduring way. The table below lists the Deeper Insights reports published to date.

Report	Description
GSD2025 Released on 28^th January 2026.	The GSD2025 is the seventh edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in January 2026. Since the previous edition, we made a number of practical enhancements to improve coverage and consistency across the report: Frequency Performance Payments (FPP): We’ve added FPP scheme revenue and cost reporting, reflecting the scheme’s commencement in June 2025. Time-of-day profiles: Added time-of-day availability and output profiles for each semi-scheduled solar and wind farm. Battery unit history tidy-up: Cleaned up unit history following the 2024 IESS changes by combining DUID history for bi-directional units. Curtailment metrics for scheduled units: We’ve moved the network and economic curtailment metrics into the main section of the report (Section #4), meaning these are now shown for scheduled units (e.g. coal, gas, hydro, batteries, etc.) as well. GSD2024 Released on 6^thFebruary 2025.	The GSD2024 was the sixth edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in February 2025. This was the first edition of the GSD to include data on the operation of bi-directional units as a single DUID — an outcome from the implementation of the IESS Rule Change that went live on 3rd June 2024. The historical data for the prior DUIDS for each battery (i.e. one DUID assigned for the generation-side and one for the load-side) was also retained within the report. GSD2023 Released 15^th February 2024.	The GSD2023 was the fifth edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in February 2024. Since the previous edition, we added two new sections to the report: FCAS Bidding Profiles: This section covers all operating units registered to deliver at least one FCAS service. For each service, this section presents charts showing month-to-month FCAS volumes bid across ten price bands from 2014 to 2023, alongside total monthly enablement volumes. A table detailing each unit’s registered FCAS capacity is also included. Semi-Scheduled Curtailment and Availability: For each operating semi-scheduled unit (such as large solar and wind farms), this section summarises monthly totals for generation, network curtailment, economic curtailment, and unavailability across the 2023 calendar year. Monthly details on availability sources, UIGF sources, and self-forecast suppression are also provided. More information, and ordering options for the GSD2023 are available here.
GSD2022 Released 31^st January 2023.	The GSD2022 was the fourth edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in January 2023. One notable difference from previous editions of the GSD, was that the GSD2022 covered the first full year of the NEM operating under Five Minute Settlement, which began on the 1^st of October 2021. GenInsights Quarterly Updates Released between July 2022 and August 2024.	After the success of our GenInsights21 report, we decided to begin developing and delivering GenInsights Quarterly Updates — based on a desire from a small number of clients who requested that we update and extend some of the appendices from the original GenInsights21 report on a regular basis (and present to them on a regular basis on a 1-on-1 basis). These reports were published every quarter starting from Q2 2022. In mid-2024 we discontinued this series of reports due to the increasing demands of our growing number of software clients.
GSD2021 Released 28^th March 2022.	The GSD2021 was the third edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in March 2022. More information, and ordering options for the GSD2021 is available here.
GenInsight21 Released 15^th December 2021.	Generator Insights 2021 (or GenInsights21 for short) was a substantial analytical report that we released in December 2021. The report takes a deep historical look at generation performance in the NEM, drawing extensively on the AEMO’s operational market data to identify long-term trends and the emerging challenges of the energy transition. GSD2020 Released 1^st February 2021.	The GSD2020 was the second edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest report, and was released in February 2021. For the first time, we offered an additional data extract so that users could attain the data underlying calculated data behind the charts and tables in the report. GSD2019 Released 28^th January 2020.	The GSD2019 was the first edition of our annual Generator Statistical Digest series, and was released in January 2020. Building on the positive feedback received for our GRC2018, we followed that report with a partial update and extension in the form of the GSD. For each operating unit in the NEM, the GSD2019 presented: Ten years of monthly performance metrics (through to 31 December 2019); and One year of daily and monthly detailed performance metrics, focusing on calendar year 2019. GRC2018 Released 31^st May 2019.	The Generator Report Card 2018 (or GRC2018 for short) was a substantial analytical report that we released in May 2019. Developed over the course of close to 10,000 hours of work, the Generator Report Card contained two core components: First, it included around 180 pages of written analysis and insights, examining a wide range of questions about the performance of the NEM’s increasingly diverse generation fleet. Second, it provided approximately 330 pages of detailed statistics — one page for every DUID that operated during the ten-year period to 31 December 2018.
