Description
The Generator Report Card 2018 (or GRC2018 for short) is a detailed analytical report that we released in May 2019 that examined how individual generation units in the NEM were actually performing, using operational data published by AEMO. Rather than focusing on installed capacity or nameplate capability, the report concentrated on observable outcomes — such as availability, reliability, dispatch outcomes, and performance against expectations — to provide an evidence-based view of how different generators were contributing to the power system during a period of growing operational stress.
The report combined written analysis and insights from principal authors Paul McArdle and Jonathon Dyson, with supporting contributions from a wide range of other electricity market analysts. It translated complex operational data into comparative assessments that highlighted strengths, weaknesses, and emerging trends across coal, gas, hydro, and renewable plant. In doing so, it placed particular emphasis on how generator behaviour and technical performance were interacting with changing market conditions and rising renewable penetration.
The report was broken into three distinct sections:
- Section 1: Key Insights. This section presents a collation of 14 core themes identified by the authors.
- Section 2: Detailed Unit Data. This section contains performance data for every operating unit in the NEM over a 10-year time horizon, up to the end of the 2018 calendar year.
- Section 3: Aggregated Results. This section provides additional discussion and analysis of generator performance when assessed in aggregate across various dimensions (e.g. geography, fuel type, and technology).
