I’ve spent the last two days at All-Energy’s first Australian green energy conference and exhibition, set in Melbourne. I was sent down to learn as much as possible, and meet new contacts who may benefit from what we do. I didn’t know what to expect, but the conference proved to be informative and a very effective networking opportunity.
On the 23rd of July, 2008 one of the HWTS – LYPS 500kV Line was down for maintenance when a second one tripped, leaving only one line remaining. This caused NEMMCO to declare the failure of that remaining line the greatest single contingency in the NEM, causing them to buy large amounts of FCAS from generators.
With demand soaring, and interconnectors constrained, generators in South Australia and Victoria took what opportunity they had to force the price high. So successful were the South Australian generators that the Cumulative Price Threshold was reached in South Australia and, under NEM Rules, an Administered Price Cap was applied for a period of time.
