As a team we have been investing some time trying to understand what happened with a significant frequency drop on Wednesday afternoon 5th August 2026:
1) As I write this, there are 5 articles collated in the category ‘2026-08-05 Frequency Drop (a significant one due to data glitch)’ :
(a) As we progressively delve further into the rabbit hole
(b) There will be more (time permitting) because:
i. We still have more questions than answers
ii. And also because (unless we’ve missed something?) we’ve not seen anything official from AEMO explaining what happened
2) By way of comparison to what happened this morning, note that on Wednesday:
(a) The drop in frequency was more significant … outside of the Normal Operating Frequency Band (to 49.825Hz at 16:25:33.410).
(b) With the frequency steadily trending down through the 16:25 dispatch interval … like it was following some misplaced targets!
Compare this with the following snapshot from our live frequency reading this morning (Friday 7th August 2026), which shows a much more vertical drop in frequency … but also much more shallow:
We can see that this occurred sometime in the five minutes prior to 07:51 (NEM time) on Friday morning, as captured in this ‘Notifications’ widget alert from ez2view (noting a trip of Millmerran unit 1 from 435MW):
