Belatedly noting return to service of VP5 and VP6 after the double-unit trip

I’ve been away for a bunch of time since late January, and have been otherwise focused on the days in which I’ve been working.

Whilst I was away, I did note that Linton wrote (on Monday 2nd February 2026) about:

1)  Firstly, about the almost simultaneous trips at Vales Point 5 and Vales Point 6; and then

2)  About the frequency impact

(a)  at least, to the extent visible in the AEMO 4-second data

(b)  see from that chart that VP6 appears to have come offline came offline slightly after VP5 (although remember the caveats about

In the market data…

We’ll firstly take a quick look at both units together (i.e. ‘Bid Stack + Bid Stack’ selection) in the ‘Bids & Offers’ widget below from ez2view – and see that (as at 14:50 on Sunday 22nd February 2026) that both units made it back online:

With respect to this image (and the annotations), we see that:

In the absence of one (or both) units…

We can see that:

1)  Both units were out through the lengthy period of spot price volatility beginning the afternoon of Thursday 5th February 2026 and into the evening

… there’s a couple articles written about this and collated here:

(a)  readers might like to note that these two units offline was one of the significant contributing factors;

(b)  along with the ‘N-AVMN_16’ constraint set, representing the long-running outage on the Avon to Marulan (16) 330kV line (and the ‘N>>16_8_18’ constraint equation’ within it) is playing a significant role

2)  There was also volatility on Friday afternoon 6th February 2026

3)  And a third bout on Saturday 7th February 2026.

Return to service (and a wobble)

Also we note that VP6 returned to service successfully on Friday afternoon 6th February 2026 in amongst the volatility – this was captured at the time in this ‘Notification’ widget alert in ez2view :

For the sibling VP5 unit, there was another wobble:

1)  Online Sunday 8th February 2026;

2)  But then offline in the early hours of Tuesday 10th February 2026:

(a)  for reasons we’ve not explored

(b)  after which it spent another 4.5 days offline, returning in the afternoon of Saturday 14th February 2026

Again, this was all captured in this series of ‘Notification’ widget alerts in ez2view:

Belatedly noting other things…

For completeness, it’s worth noting a couple other things:

Communications from Delta Electricity

For posterity, recording the message that we’d seen at the top of the Delta Electricity website on Sunday 8th February 2026 (i.e. two weeks ago today):

2026-02-08-DeltaElectricity-Website

That message has been removed now, and there’s no further information recorded under ‘News’ here.

Communications from AEMO

In Linton’s first article here soon after the double unit trip happened,  he noted (via MN133232) AEMO’s communications about the trip.  Worth also noting MN133344 that followed on Friday afternoon 6th February 2026 as captured here in ez2view:

That’s all for now…
