AEMO requests generator recall information in NSW and QLD for this Thursday 14th December 2023

This morning the AEMO published two successive market notices requesting generator recall information in QLD and NSW for this coming Thursday, the 14th December 2023. These market notices suggest that tight supply-demand is expected in those two regions on Thursday.

A generator recall information request is a procedure undertaken by the AEMO used in foreseeable circumstances where they may be required to intervene in the market. During this process, Scheduled Generators are notified to provide details of any additional capacity that can be made available (i.e. “recalled”), and the associated time needed to make this capacity available (i.e. “recall time”). If there is no market response, this information is used to determine the latest time in which the AEMO would be able to intervene. Further information about this procedure can be found in the AEMO’s Guide to Generator Recall Plans.

The initial request for the NSW region was contained in market notice 112200 published at 11:01am this morning (NEM time):

Meanwhile, I can see that a LOR2 condition is currently forecast for NSW between 15:30 and 20:00 on Thursday. The screenshot below shows how this forecast has evolved and been upgraded from an LOR1 over the past 24 hours.

An LOR1 condition has also been forecast for the QLD region over a similar time frame, but as of 11am this morning this has been downgraded and no LOR condition is currently forecast at the time of writing.
